Next Show
February 19-23, 2017
Focus
Defense and military operations, with a large showing of vehicle systems and rocket-type defense material.
Dress
Business casual to dress, depending on the impression you want to make. Keep it modest as this is an Islamic country.
Show Food
We’ve added this category at the request of friends who go to many military trade shows. Food was plentiful at the show with many stands and restaurants at the Exhibition Centre. There were stands for all tastes from European, Arab, and Asian cultures. Not a show where you have to worry about finding food.
Hotel Hints
Hotels are relatively expensive, but bargains may be found. SADJ suggests that you try to book at least six months in advance. Most of the Western mid-to-high level chains are in evidence.
Power & Plug Types
220volt 50 cycle. Abu Dhabi uses both the standard European two-prong, or the UK-style three large prong outlets, so prepare for both.
Country Warnings
Abu Dhabi is considered one of the more Westernized or liberal Islamic countries, but it is still strict according to Western standards. Modest dress and respect for Islamic traditions and religion should be carefully observed.
Tipping
Service charges on restaurant bills generally go to the restaurant (not the staff), so it’s best to give your server cash directly. Tipping is for excellent service, and judge the type of tip according to your hotel accommodations. 10% or round-ups to taxis.
Currency Type
United Arab Emirates Dirham (Symbol AED). At press time, one AED = $0.27 USD, € 0.20, £ 0.18, and ¥ 24.62. Current updates can be found at www.xe.com/ucc/
Getting Around
Driving is on the right in the U.S. or European manner, renting a car can be done with a visitor’s visa and International Driver’s license. Taxis are readily available as are hotel cars for hire.
Military Museums
The UAE is planning a large Military Museum as part of their cultural heritage museum system, and it is in process.
Tourism
Abu Dhabi is visitor friendly, and the hotel and tourism industry has many websites to help you prepare for the visit. Use www.visitabudhabi.ae/ for more information.
