Focus
Expomil is an exhibition that primarily showcases the local manufacturing production, and the groups desiring to exhibit to the region. Small arms, vehicles, military and law enforcement items are well displayed.
Dress
Business Casual, to suits. Attendees are equally divided between civilian street clothes and dress. Suggest wearing layers to deal with the changes in temperature.
Hotel Hints
Try hotels.com but remember that most of the chains are represented in Bucharest and unless you are very adventuresome, we suggest staying to the Intercontinental, Hyatt, or similar.
Power & Plug Types
220volt 50 cycle, standard European two prong plugs.
Country Warnings
While Romania is a wonderful country with many nice people, the problems become evident when arriving at the airport and being accosted by the local taxi drivers. Warning signs at the airport tell you only to deal with the one taxi company, but we suggest vigilance in getting to the legitimate cabs at the curbside. There are many scams being operated in Romania, so have care in where you go.
Cultural Hints
Romania has a rich history, and the arts and music are well developed. Take the time to talk with people, and to visit the cultural sites.
Tipping
Tipping is normal, about 10% of charges over 50 RON or so. For smaller purchases, adjust upward.
Currency
Romanian New Lei (RON) is the currency used. At press time, the RON was equal to $0.33, €0.24, £0.22, and ¥29.98. Get current info at www.xe.com/ucc/.
Getting Around
There are numerous layers of taxi charges, running from very reasonable to extortionate. Be sure to look at the cab and see what the per kilometer rate is. If it starts with a “1” that is good, if it is “3” or over, it will be very expensive. Busses and trains are reliable, but we recommend taxis in town.
Military Museums
The Romanian National Military Museum is well worth the visit, the displays concentrate on uniforms, transport, and artillery. Located on 125-127 Mircea Vulcanescu Street, district 1.
Tourism
www.romaniatourism.com is the official site – explore it before your trip. Any spare time can be spent around the city of Bucharest, and there are many, many good restaurants to try.
