The FN EVOLYS ultralight machine gun has been given some modified features based on feedback from in-depth testing by potential customers during their own evaluation.

FN Herstal recently unveiled this new member of its illustrious family of machine guns. It joins the FN M2HB-QCB .50 (12.7x99mm NATO) calibre heavy machine gun, the FN MAG 7.62 NATO calibre medium/general purpose machine gun, and the FN MINIMI 5.56 and 7.62mm NATO calibre light machine guns. Standardized by dozens of armed forces including many NATO members and allies, they have totally dominated the NATO calibre machine gun market for decades.

The FN EVOLYS, chambered in 5.56x45mm or 7.62x51mm calibre, is for mobile infantry or SF units, designed to bridge the gap between the rifle and the light machine gun. It has been undergoing trials with several armed forces, who appreciated its greatly reduced weight, ease of handling, long one-piece top rail allowing in-line mounting of optics, its reliability, and above all the intensive firepower of a belt-fed weapon. Feedback identified two features that users suggested should be modified – and FN Herstal has incorporated them:

Buttstock: A M4 type buttstock with ergonomics familiar to many users, with adjustable length of pull (6 positions) and interchangeable cheek rest (2 heights).

Bipod: The optional bipod has been given stronger aluminium legs and a reinforced attachment interface providing a more stable and robust support.

The FN EVOLYS with these new features will be displayed on the FN Herstal’s booth at Eurosatory 2024 to be held in Paris from 17 to 21 June. Come and see it, booth F95, hall 6, on the Belgian pavilion.

B.E. Meyers & Co., Inc. is proud to unveil the MILR Miniature Intelligent Laser Rangefinder, which includes the world’s first ballistically disturbed infrared laser Fire Control System.

Based on a revolutionary new digital Vertical-Cavity, Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) diode core, the MILR supports the widest range of platforms and applications that allows for a singular, lightweight, and comprehensive solution for advanced ranging, aiming, illuminating, and ballistic solutions. Optimized for machinegun use and fully feature capable for precision rifles as well as remote weapon stations, the MILR is the only device that enables full day and night ballistic capability from a weapons platform without the use of a clip-on night vision device.

Meyers & Co. MILR, the world’s first ballistically disturbed infrared aiming laser and fire control system. (B.E. Meyers)

Capability Development

To ensure a decisive advantage during night operations and increase survivability and lethality of the operator, a novel approach to range finding, infrared illumination, and targeting via a new fire control system was proposed by B.E. Meyers & Co. The MILR Miniature Intelligent Laser Rangefinder is a Class 3B/3R combination high-power infrared aiming and illumination device with visible pointer, as well as range-finding ballistic computer (via the Applied Ballistics integrated software) that can both provide holds on-screen for use with a day-optic or actively declinate the disturbed infrared aiming laser for ballistic compensation when using head-borne night vision devices.

A new laser-based variable divergence illuminator provides ideal beam clarity over an extended application range while also decreasing response times in near and mid-range engagements. The system is designed for combat environmental criteria to include immersion, recoil, and thermal shock, while maintaining position stability and system functionality.

The B.E. Meyers & Co. MILR, the world’s first ballistically disturbed infrared aiming laser and fire control system. (B.E. Meyers)

Technology and Design

The technology and functionality behind the MILR have been in development for the last several years and support a design concept which allows for complete digital manipulation of all key system controls, to include power, divergence, VIS/IR, ranging, mode/function, and more. As the power and divergence controls on the MILR are completely digital there is no optical or mechanical movement within the system apart from azimuth and elevation boresight controls. Divergence and power are synchronized for best pointing and illumination effect and are continually and instantly at the operator’s discretion through the onboard control configurations.

The design and functionality of MILR is based on its ability to achieve digital laser movement within the system, specifically the infrared pointer, which internally declinates to create a ballistic solution for the shooter while under NVGs. The introduction of this first Disturbed Infrared Aiming Laser (DIAL) capability allows for true day-to-night extended-range overmatch for weapons platforms traditionally limited in effectiveness during night engagements. Additionally, the MILR uses a step-through ballistic setup interface that provides ballistic computer capability to user groups not previously trained to use a ballistic solver data, while retaining compatibility for traditional long-form profile setups.

The B.E. Meyers & Co. MILR, the world’s first ballistically disturbed infrared aiming laser and fire control system. (B.E. Meyers)

Platforms and Applications

The versatility and ruggedness of the MILR design lends itself for use on most individual weapon systems, precision rifle platforms, crew-served weapon systems, and remote weapon stations as well as other integrated solutions. Additionally, MILR seamlessly communicates with Kestrel Instruments wind and weather meters for expeditious host-weapon data download. Our Disturbed Infrared Aiming Laser (DIAL) technology is collaboratively partnered with Applied Ballistics, Bluetooth, and Unity Tactical, providing a revolutionary technical concept in a rugged, ergonomic, lightweight, and combat-capable device.

Features and Specifications

By orchestrating these best-in-class features and combining them with our next generation VCSEL core, the technological versatility inherent in MILR allows for an exceptionally enhanced multi-platform visible/infrared aiming and illumination laser solution. The MILR series of laser rangefinders truly create a new category of fire control systems, and like all B.E.
IWA OutdoorClassics invites the industry to Nuremberg in 2024: The trade fair is celebrating its 50th anniversary. An achievement that reflects the fact that international manufacturers and retailers from the hunting and shooting sports industry have been strengthening their business and relationships at IWA OutdoorClassics for 50 years. “Especially in our industry, a personal connection between international manufacturers and specialist retailers from all over the world is extremely important,” emphasizes Rebecca Renn, Event Director of IWA OutdoorClassics. “We are delighted that they have been calling Nuremberg their home for over five decades now – founded by the industry, grown with the industry,” Renn explains. To mark the anniversary, the IWA OutdoorClassics supporting program will also be expanded. The aim is to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. The anniversary will be celebrated with the industry at an IWA Future Party. Both exhibitors and visitors can already purchase party tickets.

HIGH DEMAND

The 50th anniversary is also having an impact on demand from exhibitors. At this stage, around 1,000 exhibitors have already registered. The most important industry leaders will once again be joined by numerous newcomers and first-time exhibitors. Demand is particularly high in the area of hunting and sporting guns, ammunition and optics and the associated accessories. The relevant halls are fully booked except for a handful of spaces. Retailers and visitors can look forward to the flourishing thermal imaging segment, which is concentrated in Hall 4A. The airsoft segment, which will be located in Hall 2 next year, is also growing. Here, too, there will be another highlight for visitors in addition to the AIRSOFT Shooting Range. IWA OutdoorClassics is thus asserting its role as the leading international trade fair for hunting and shooting sports. “Our mission is to present the numerous opportunities and synergies that our interlinked segments offer,” says Renn. “IWA OutdoorClassics is the platform where innovation, collaboration and inspiration come together to redefine hunting, shooting and the outdoor experience,” Renn concludes.

ABOUT IWA CLASSICS

IWA OutdoorClassics is the world’s leading exhibition for the hunting and target sports industry. From hunting, sporting and airsoft weapons to clothing, high-quality outdoor equipment and personal safety equipment – the IWA OutdoorClassics product portfolio covers the entire range of the trade. In 2023, the trade fair welcomed a total of 34,000 trade visitors from 119 countries to Nuremberg. In 2024, IWA OutdoorClassics will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary and will take place from 29.02.-03.03. at the Exhibition Center Nuremberg.

By Randi Stenson, MCCoE Public Affairs

The Army has released its first doctrinal publication dedicated to the topic of information and its role in multidomain operations on the Army Publishing Directorate website, Nov. 27, 2023.

Army Doctrine Publication 3-13, Information, codifies the Army’s approach to the military uses of data and information, and recognizes all activities generate informational effects that can contribute to, or hamper, achieving objectives.

“Information is central to everything we do. It is the basis of intelligence, a fundamental component of command and control, and the foundation for communicating thoughts, opinions and ideas,” said Lt. Gen. Milford Beagle, Jr., commanding general, Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth. “As a dynamic of combat power, Army forces fight for, defend, and fight with information to create and exploit information advantages — the use, protection, and exploitation of information to achieve objectives more effectively than enemies and adversaries.”

Authors from CAC’s Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate, the organization charged with writing the new manual, acknowledge that changes in the security environment necessitated an update to doctrine. Adversaries are already using informational power to try to gain regional influence and control well ahead of potential armed conflict. These actions make the competition for information and ideas continuous and persistent.

Key to achieving objectives in a contested environment like this means gaining an information advantage, a new term now defined in doctrine. An information advantage is “a condition when a force holds the initiative in terms of situational understanding, decision making, and relevant actor behavior.”

“Our new doctrine makes it clear that everyone plays some role in achieving information advantage,” said retired Army colonel and CADD Director Richard Creed. “And similarly, commanders need to consider information from a combined arms perspective because all Army capabilities create effects in the information dimension of our operational environment. We can’t make it the sole purview of a single staff section or certain specialties and expect success during operations. Operations now require leaders to consider how information enables operations, how to protect friendly information, how to employ information against an enemy or adversary, and how to attack the enemy’s ability to use information effectively.”

To facilitate that process, ADP 3-13 gives leaders a framework for developing information advantages during operations and at home station. It also spells out how commanders can leverage aspects of information that enable command and control; protect data, information, and networks; inform audiences; influence threats and foreign relevant actors; and attack the threat’s ability to use information.

The publication of ADP 3-13 is just the start of a sustained education campaign from CAC. As with the release of FM 3-0, CADD is developing a series of products to help Soldiers understand the new doctrine. Articles, videos and podcasts devoted to ADP 3-13 are in the works and will be announced via CADD’s social media channels. The team will also work closely with the Centers of Excellence, Army University and the combat training centers to ensure this information is incorporated into professional military education and training. In addition, mobile training teams will visit select installations and organizations to further integrate the ideas outlined in the manual.

“ADP 3-13 provides the intellectual underpinnings that describe how Army forces will gain, protect, and exploit information advantages; however, doctrine is only the beginning. The hard work starts when we begin to internalize these ideas into leader development, education, and training,” said Beagle.

To learn more about ADP 3-13 and other doctrine, visit the Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate website.

Aimpoint has been chosen to deliver mini red dot sights to the Alternative Individual Weapon System, designated L403A1 to UK MOD, via its exclusive U.K. distributor Edgar Brothers.

The AIW will consist of three elements including the rifle system L403A1, the optic system L900A1, and the training system. As part of the optic system, Aimpoint will supply the ACRO P-2 red dot sight.

According to Aimpoint, “the ACRO series sights have been built to exceed the requirements of the users and have been tested and proven to withstand the extreme shock, vibration, temperatures, and material stresses generated by firing over 20,000 rounds of .40 S&W ammunition. Primarily designed for use on handguns, the ACRO next generation can also be mounted on carbines, shotguns and hunting rifles or utilized as a backup sight on magnified scopes and thermal imagers. These versatile optics are night vision compatible and are the ultimate solution for extremely rugged, low-profile, compact sighting needs.”

“We at Aimpoint are extremely proud to be part of this Hunter project that pushes the limits of innovation for the modern personal weapon system, “says Erik Jeppsson, Aimpoint’s director of sales and marketing. “We trust our distributor Edgar Brother to bring the system into service alongside DE&S in a very professional way, and that our product will contribute to the success of the AIW by enhancing soldiers’ capabilities to effectively perform their mission.“

Specifically referring to Brazil, which represents more than 40% of military spending in Latin America, these sectors have shown substantial growth in recent years, given the demands for modernization and re-equipment of the armed forces in Brazil, through strategic projects,” says Sergio Jardim, General Director of Clarion Events Brazil, the organizer of LAAD Defence & Security 2017.
